It shouldn't come as a great shock that leisure suits came of age in the era of plastic, Tang, and all things synthetic. The material is made from oil, and the fact that it's manufactured from a nonrenewable resource isn't its only flaw. The production of polyester and of nylon (another oil-based fabric) is energy intensive and releases nitrogen and sulfur oxides along with particulate matter, heavy metals, and carbon monoxide into the air surrounding plants. Some companies, such as Patagonia, have started recycling programs for polyester so they can reuse this material for outdoor clothing (polyester does have some water-repelling properties that make it useful for exercise gear) without adding to its pollution problem. They accept all polyester garments and repurpose them into undergarments and fleece jackets.

A choose-your-own ending love story tap dance opera.
Chicago Tap Theatre will be presenting its first ever tap story-show where the audience will determine the fate of the tale. "LoveTaps" explores the concept of lonely singles searching for their soul-mates through internet dating, and what happens after those couples meet their on-line prospects in-person. A BLEAK market for organic cotton is making it hard to pay farmers high prices as it was purported, confirming fears that the venture was not economically viable at least for now.

Latest figures issued by the Global Organic Exchange indicate that 35,000 tonnes (about 160,754 bales) of organic cotton is among the unsold stock of cotton, which is yet to find buyers.

“In addition, a number of farmers had planted vast acreage of organic cotton on speculation and in response to what had appeared to be a healthy, burgeoning marketplace,” laments the report.

“As a result, unsold stocks which represent between 17 and 22% of production (some 30,000 to 35,000 tonnes (or 137,789 to 160,754 bales) of organic cotton has yet to find buyers.”

The report confirms concerns raised by the Cotton Development Organisation (CDO) that farmers especially in the north had been forced to grow organic cotton yet the yields and the income does not help in fighting household poverty.

CDO explained that enmasse introduction of organic cotton was suffocating the industry and impoverishing the farmers.

It said there was a need to train and sensitise the farmers as well as compensate them for the losses incurred. The Organic Exchange body called for the organic promoters to respect their contract commitments.

“2008-09 was a year of challenges for the organic cotton sector,” noted Simon Ferrigno, the Organic Exchange farm development team manager and lead author of the report.

“But also one that highlights the need to improve recordkeeping, forecasting, pricing and communication systems and gain more firm commitments and contracts.”

In order to ensure that the farmers do not lose out, Henry Bagire, the agriculture state minister, advised them to spray their cotton fields with pesticides to control pests and diseases.

“A farmer who sprays his cotton garden with the pesticides earns five times more compared to those practising organic cotton farming,” he said.

“An acre of conventional cotton yields between 1,500kg and 2,000kg, while one gets about 150kg from an organic cotton garden of the same size.

“This is unfair to farmers. You should watch out for those who want to exploit you,” the minister stated.

With conventional cotton growing, farmers use synthetic fertilisers and pesticides, while in organic cotton farming, farmers rely on natural inputs without using pesticides or fertilisers.

This results into low yields because the crop is highly susceptible to pests and diseases, the minister added.

International Cotton Advisory Committee(ICAC) has recently also affirmed that organic production practices are complex and require extensive research and training for successful implementation. ICAC provides statistics on world cotton production.

Kristin Hassan grew up in a family that always liked to make their own things. Her mother and grandmother made their own dresses and curtains.

Hassan felt drawn to the area of design. “It was inevitable that I would get sucked to a sewing machine at some point in my life,” Hassan said.

Hassan attended to the Illinois Art Institute and was one of the original six designers in the Chicago Fashion Incubator

, a program that that aids local fashion designers with resources and mentors so they can succeed in the city.

Hassan has seen a lot of success in her career thus far, but as much as she cares about her progress, she cares just as much about the progress of the Earth. Hassan creates what she calls “Earth-positive” designs. “I thought that if I was going to do a clothing line, I was going to do it as green as possible,” she said. “Our fabrics are organic, we don’t ship anything overseas…It’s kind of a business wide concept.”

Hassan’s company organiK Revolution is not the only clothing brand in Chicago that is looking to be more eco-friendly. More and more companies in the area are incorporating green friendly ways in reducing fashion waste. According to Organic Essentials, conventionally grown cotton production uses 25% of the world’s consumption of insecticides and uses large amounts of water for irrigation; whereas organic cotton is grown using more natural methods, crop rotation and insects that eat other insects, to ensure the stability of crops. However, Chicago businesses are concerned about more than just the fabrics.

“We do sweat shop free, fair wage labor locally,” says Melissa Baswell, designer and President of Mountains of the Moon. “Supporting and producing locally, you are not creating carbon emissions through shipping and you are supporting a local economy.”Mountains of the Moon, like many eco-friendly clothing companies, uses recycled paper and cardboard for hang tags. They have tried to maintain environmentally healthy business. Topper Hull of Eightfold Development, which owns Skinstinct, a boutique focusing on body friendly products, said that being eco-friendly can sometimes be difficult. As a store owner it takes a lot of leg work and research to certify merchandise is environmentally friendly. “It’s a real challenge,” Hull said, “and that’s the reason we aren’t 100% in our organic clothing offering and we have made a decision that probably in 2010 we will be moving less organic because of the economy.”

Hull said that one of the prides of the company is that they have tried to make organic clothing more affordable. Price and availability have been problems for man

y designers, but all three companies see it as an opportunity for more creativity. “It keeps things fresh, because it creates challenges for us,” said Baswell. “What can we do with this? How can we take these fabrics and challenge ourselves to make something that goes beyond stereotypical eco-fashion.”

The city of Chicago has also played a significant role in these clothing companies success. The city has a long way to go, but it’s one of the greenest cities in the Midwest.

Baswell, Hassan and Hull praised Chicago for the way its residents have welcomed the eco-clothing movement. “I think they are embracing the initiative that myself and some other green designers have put forth,” said Hassan. “For the consumers, especially the one’s I’m targeting, the younger generation, I think there is a slow turnaround for them to catch on to it.”The companies are looking toward the future, especially for the fashion industry. Hassan and Baswell both said that the fashion industry is notoriously wasteful, and they think it is time for the world of fashion to go green.

“You got to treat the world the way you want it to be for your kids,” said Hassan. “Everything from construction, housing, to the cleaning products you use in your house, everyone else is making the effort to go green. I don’t think the fashion industry should be an exception.”

Position Summary:
•We are seeking a motivated individual with strong sales skills. A person who brings dynamic, sales focused energy to our operations team. We are looking for someone to grow with us.
•You also will be responsible for the basics of retail including greeting and offering assistance to customers as needed. To assist in the execution of merchandising and operational functions to Company Standards within sales floor areas as assigned.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Sales/Customer Service
•Driving top line sales by way of outstanding customer service, product knowledge and the understanding of our customer needs.
•Achieving daily sales goals on a regular basis.
•Greets all customers with a smile. Assists customers in a friendly, courteous manner. Effectively responds to questions and requests from customers. Promptly responds to all requests.
•Responds appropriately to POS backup calls. Assists at POS and Customer Service as needed and complies with the Company’s 2 in a line standard.
•Properly holds merchandise for customers when needed, including returning merchandise not picked up to the sales floor. Processes payments and coupons/discounts within Company standards.
•Solicits customers to sign up for our e-list.
•May be asked to assist with marketing; Feet on the street marketing, telephone calls and direct mail campaigns.

Merchandising
•Completes merchandise recovery and sales floor returns. Maintains fitting rooms, sales floor, and work areas.
•Follows Company merchandise presentation directives and standards while merchandising incoming freight and replenishing the sales floor.
•Identifies and communicates merchandising and sales floor operational opportunities to
MOD (Manager on Duty).
•Completes callbacks, transfers, and other paperwork as directed by MOD.
•Arranges merchandise on fixtures and maintains non-promotional signs on the sales floor according to Company standards. Resolves ad issues as needed by changing signs to reflect current sale price.
•Assists in the maintenance of Company stockroom capacity and organizational guidelines.
•Follows Company Best Practices and participates in Company programs (ie: rewraps, mis-mates, damages, defectives, even exchanges and store shortage action plans).

Restock – HQ to Boutiques
•Assists the team in utilizing all restock reports daily and ensures Company in-stock goals are maintained.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:
•Skinstinct does not hire an outside service for housekeeping, so all team members assist with cleaning duties which may include, but are not limited to: sweeping, mopping, dusting, cleaning restrooms, disposing of garbage and recycled materials, washing customer beverage glasses, preparation and taking of inventory and stock room organization and cleaning.

Skinstinct Takes Part in All Things Organic Conference and Trade Show

Skinstinct joined with The Organic Trade Association to offer an Organic Apparel Walking Tour.

CHICAGO, IL. (June 16, 2009) -- Visitors from all over the world gathered on Chicago's Magnificent Mile on Tuesday to learn and experience the latest fashions in organic fiber. Other stores involved in the tour were Banana Republic, GAP, H&M, and Levi Strauss.

Skinstinct visitors were welcomed with an informative presentation on bamboo, organic cotton, hemp, and other natural fibers. Showcased were Skinstinct's 100% bamboo bath robes, 70% bamboo and 30% organic cotton towels, 55% hemp and 45% organic cotton jeans, as well as organic cotton and bamboo t-shirts. The guests also viewed the latest fashion in the Skinstinct summer collection.

The tour is a part of the Organic Trade Association's All Things Organic Conference and Trade Show, Expo Comida Latina and All Asia Food conference and trade shows that took place June 16-18 at the Lakeside Center at McCormick Place.

What:
The Organic Trade Association (OTA) will host an Organic Fiber Walking Tour along Chicago's Magnificent Mile, North Michigan Avenue, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 16. Participants will visit Banana Republic, GAP, H&M, Levi Strauss, and Skinstinct stores selling a wide variety of organic cotton apparel and home products. The Walking Tour is part of the All Things Organic™, Expo Comida Latina and All Asia Food conference and trade shows, which will take place June 16-18 at the Lakeside Center at McCormick Place. The conference sessions also include a seminar on Wednesday, June 17, from 10:30 a.m. to noon on the organic fiber market and standards, with speakers from the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) Working Group, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Organic Exchange, and Oregon Tilth.

U.S. sales of food and non-food organic products reached $24.6 billion by the end of 2008, growing an impressive 17.1 percent over 2007 sales, according to the OTA’s 2009 Organic Industry Survey. Organic fiber/linens/clothing in 2008 totaled $472 million, up 65 percent from 2007. This figure mirrors the growth in the international organic fiber market. According to the Organic Exchange Organic Cotton Market Report 2007-2008, global retail sales of organic cotton apparel and home textile products reached an estimated $3.2 billion in 2008 representing a 63 percent increase from the $1.9 billion market in 2007.

Makeup: we pencil, brush, sweep and rub it on every morning, touching it up at various times throughout the day, only to scrub it clean away again at night. But do we really know what we're putting on our faces?

Our bodies are affected not only by what we ingest, but by what we put on our skin. Because skin is porous, many harmful chemicals are absorbed directly through the skin into our organs and tissues. While we generally have pretty good internal filters for toxins, some do not get removed and remain in our bodies for years some of these chemicals are merely mild irritants while others are suspected carcinogens.

"The amount of chemicals we absorb from cosmetics, according to a UK study, can be as high as 2 kg a year," says Rohan Widdison, founder and CEO of NVEY ECO Makeup, an eco range of cosmetics manufactured here in Australia.

"It really poses the question what impact does it have on our health?"

Brands like NVEY, Miessence, Inika and other natural and organic makeup ranges opt to minimize chemical use as much as possible, while maintaining the integrity and easy-use of the product.

Many alternative ingredients can be used. For example, talc powder is a common compound found in powder finishers. "Corn starch is a great alternative," says Widdison. Organic waxes and oils such as organics beeswax, safflower and castor oil can be used instead of mineral oils in lipsticks.

Facebook: All Your Stuff is Ours, Even if You Quit

The Consumerist has noticed a seemingly slight but very important (and disturbing) change in Facebook’s terms of service, regarding user-generated content.

In short, all of the content you’ve ever uploaded on Facebook can be used, modified or even sublicensed by Facebook in every possible way - even if you quit the service.

The TOS says the following:

You hereby grant Facebook an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to (a) use, copy, publish, stream, store, retain, publicly perform or display, transmit, scan, reformat, modify, edit, frame, translate, excerpt, adapt, create derivative works and distribute (through multiple tiers), any User Content you (i) Post on or in connection with the Facebook Service or the promotion thereof subject only to your privacy settings or (ii) enable a user to Post, including by offering a Share Link on your website and (b) to use your name, likeness and image for any purpose, including commercial or advertising, each of (a) and (b) on or in connection with the Facebook Service or the promotion thereof.

It also used to contain another bit that is now missing.

You may remove your User Content from the Site at any time. If you choose to remove your User Content, the license granted above will automatically expire, however you acknowledge that the Company may retain archived copies of your User Content.

This is also reinforced by the “Termination” section:

The following sections will survive any termination of your use of the Facebook Service: Prohibited Conduct, User Content, Your Privacy Practices, Gift Credits, Ownership; Proprietary Rights, Licenses, Submissions, User Disputes; Complaints, Indemnity, General Disclaimers, Limitation on Liability, Termination and Changes to the Facebook Service, Arbitration, Governing Law; Venue and Jurisdiction and Other.

Sure, most users don’t really care (or think they don’t care) about all this, but the idea that you now cannot stop Facebook from using your content should you ever want to is frightening to say the least.

Is Facebook Connect the reason?

Commenter OrtensiaCadmium on Consumerist finds a probable reason for this change in Facebook TOS.

“That’s fairly common language in terms for various sites such as Facebook. While it gives Facebook some far-reaching and scary possibilities, the basic idea is that things you upload may end up residing on servers outside of Facebook’s direct control. These broad rights make it so that you can’t sue Facebook for some cached content on some other server…”

Yes, with Facebook Connect in place, it’s likely that Facebook simply must do this in order to avoid possible lawsuits over content that isn’t even stored by them anymore. However, the same commenter rightfully notices that “…yes, it also means they can sell your photos or use them in advertising with no recompense to you.”

It’s not just your stuff, it’s everyone’s stuff

The possible implications of this TOS change go beyond these concerns. Sure, you can choose not to use Facebook at all, but that doesn’t mean a thing. Someone can still take your photo, slap it on Facebook, and now neither you nor the author of the photo can stop Facebook from using the photo in whichever way they please.

Looking at it globally, millions of people are uploading bits of information on everyone and everything, to a huge online database, and by doing so they’re automatically giving away the rights to use or modify this information to a private corporation. And not only that; they now also waiver the right to ever take it back from it.

Facebook should take a long, deep look into how it treats its users. Until now, users had options with regards to how the data they generated on Facebook was used. Now, they have no options whatsoever, rather than quit the service altogether. It’s a major difference; I’m not going to take it lightly, and neither should you.
